First discovered in 1909, ergothioneine is not considered an essential amino acid, but research is showing the potential for many physiological actions in the body. Ergothioneine is only produced by fungi and cyano/mycobacteria in nature. The human body has ergothioneine receptors and transporters, but like other essential amino acids, our body is unable to produce its own endogenous production. Ergothioneine is found in many different human tissues such as red blood cells, liver, kidney, brain, bone and semen to name a few.

Ergothioneine is absorbed and transported around the body by Ergo Transporter (ETT), previously named OCTN1, a protein in the organic cation transporter family. The excretion of ergothioneine from the body is slow, making researchers think there is some need for it or some physiological activity taking place during this time. In contrast, many polyphenols (strong antioxidants) are excreted quickly from the body, making the body treat these anti-oxidants like hormetic initiators.

Ergothioneine is found in high levels at tissue injury sites in certain liver and heart pathologies. This increase in ergothioneine is believed to be a cytoprotective mechanism that the body uses for protection via increased OCTN1 gene coding. If true, ergothioneine could hold a unique position of being an adaptive anti-oxidant.

Medicinal mushrooms have a significant amount of ergothioneine compared to other foods. The ergothioneine found in medicinal mushrooms is very stable, a rare finding for compounds of this nature, which fits in with other redox regulators like glutathione.
